Truckee, California is home to the famous championship Tahoe Donner Golf Course. Cradled by towering mountains, bubbling creeks and narrow greenways the course is set against a scenic backdrop of mountains and the resort that it is just a small part of. Golfing is something that has given is a reputation for some of the ultimate challenges in the Lake Tahoe region. Vacations there are as special as the warmth and hospitality that the friendly staff welcome and embrace guests with.
The course offers an 18-hole extravaganza of enjoyable golf that puts emphasis on accuracy versus speed. This half-private, half-public course was the brainchild of designers, Roy Williams and William Bell, Jr. It offers amentias and facilities such as a golf store, club rentals, a driving range and varied golfing clinics and lessons. In fact, there is a lodge where banquet facilities, a restaurant and bar are becoming increasingly popular since their recent opening. Snacks and beverages can also be arranged for players whilst on the course.
The course is a picture of natural and dreamlike beauty. In fact, it is considered to be one of Tahoe's best greenways. Its hours start at 7am and end at 7pm every day, dependent on the weather and sunrise/sunset times.
Golfing lessons at the Tahoe Donner include four courses, one designed for junior players. The basic course teaches golfing fundamentals and the necessary error corrections. It is available to every level of player, taking place at the driving range every Sunday at 9am, costing a mere $20. The junior clinic is for kids from ages eight to thirteen, teaching the basics and operates at the driving range on Tuesdays (3:00pm) and Sundays (10am), costing $15 per person. A women's swing clinic focuses on swinging basics and needed corrections and is designed for all ability levels. It takes place at the driving range each Wednesday at 11am, costing $20. A short game clinic offers pitching, putting and chipping skill instruction to all levels of ability, male and female, adult or junior, on each Friday of the month, starting at 11am. This takes places on the putting green for just $20 per player. Clinics are drop-in and no reservations are required.
There are also two clubs for private membership, including one for men and the other for women. The male one meets every Wednesday at lunchtime. The women meet at varied times on Tuesday mornings. Memberships are open to anyone with a fee around $88. Amenities and services include private club tournaments, dinners and other events.
There are special rules for all players when using the course. Each player has to provide their own bag and clubs, but the use of metal spikes is banned. Golfing clothing is mandatory for everyone and at all times. Whether rented or private, only two people are permitted on each cart. Anyone following a golfing group on the course has to be age twelve and above, and may ride with cart users, but are subject to a riding fee. No pull carts are allowed on the course. Any use of food or drink coolers is banned and all snacks and beverages have to be obtained from the clubhouse facilities. All kids below age twelve have to be in the presence of a responsible person over age eighteen when on the driving range, and absolutely no babies in strollers are permitted in the asphalt or tee area. All pets should be kept at home or tied up at the designated spot near the clubhouse.
