The main attraction for many is Washoe Lake, which was immortalized by Mark Twain who took note of its reputation for high speed winds that were able to knock over poorly built homes and remove roves during winter storms. Tales from its history show many incidents of stage coaches being rolled over and their passengers sent spilling onto the ground. Even today, when the winds get stronger, large trucks and other commercial vehicles have been known to suffer the same fate as they travel along the local highway.
